Back to School, Back to Lunch

We all have different memories of “back to school”.  I remember how exciting the first day back was.  All my friends were tan from summer vacations and so much taller than I remembered!  The anxiety of where I was going to sit in class, where my locker was located, and wondering how heavy my books were going to be this year.  Everyone had bright white sneakers, fresh pencils…and new lunch boxes!

The best lunch boxes were the ones that had a matching thermos.  Mom’s would pack these lunches with a thermos of hot chocolate or creamy tomato soup.  My classmates would open up their thermos and I would see the steam escape from something delicious inside.  However, my lunch box didn’t have room for a thermos because my mom would fill it up with other goodies instead.

Even on the most rushed mornings my mom would always find the time to make me the best sandwiches.  Some of her specialties included bologna with mustard, tuna salad with pickles, and crunchy peanut butter with strawberry jelly…all cut perfectly into triangles.  Each sandwich would be wrapped in a paper napkin with a note or sometimes a smiley face or a heart.  I would always love reading them, but I was always too embarrassed to have anyone else see them, so I would carefully hide them back inside my lunch box.

With everything high-tech nowadays, it seems like even Kindergartners have smart phones, and the “love notes” from mom have now gone into cyberspace.  Here at Milton’s, we’ve baked up a Love Note Generator so busy mom’s can go to our website and create personalized love notes to print and hide in a lunch box, post to Facebook or Twitter, or email to their loved ones.   So even if you forget to put a note in your child’s lunch, you can still send them something special to brighten their day.

Click here to create and send your own Love Note!  The first day back to school can be rough, but once they finally find their seat in the cafeteria and open up their new lunch box, they’ll feel right at home with a note from Mom or Dad.

Stay tuned for our next blog posting when we give you tips and recipes for nutritious (but delicious) lunches that will keep your kids full and energized all day.
