in In the Kitchen, Meet Milton's, Seasonal Solutions

At Milton’s we love to hear about the many ways in which our baked goods help people discover foods that are healthy, taste great, and make the daily snacking or meal occasions that little bit more special.  Here is a great summertime story and recipe that serves as this week’s blog posting.

The evenings have been beautiful lately here in SoCal, and one of our bakers decided to have some friends over – just the guys – to relax on the back deck, get caught up, and have some fun telling adventure stories late into the night.  It was a great conversation of guys just relaxing and chipping in with the updates of life. One had finished a major project and another had recently been promoted. Two were dads again, one to a son, another to a daughter, both beautiful children.  Another was studying for big exams for his professional certification.

Gradually the general updates drifted from “the big stuff” to more hilarious topics… camping adventures and misadventures. The best memories of growing up with our Dads. Crazy travel experiences in Europe where no one speaks English. Air travel horror stories (pretty common!) where we (or our luggage) didn’t end up where expected.  Hiking adventures – and misadventures involving large and hungry bears (not so common!).

All this hilarious banter resulted in a big attack of the munchies – and thankfully to face this crisis there were two firefighters in the party. One thing you may not know about firefighters is that yes they rescue people everyday, and put their lives on the line for perfect strangers – but they also are pretty darn good cooks given that they take turns cooking for the firehouse.  So they are also experts in feeding hungry men who may or may not be great in the kitchen – but have grown ravenous while describing their “near death experiences” with hungry bears.  In no time they had found a quick and tasty snack– we’ll call it the “Fireman’s Dip – served with Milton’s Gourmet Crackers!”

Fireman’s Dip, with Gourmet Crackers – (time to prepare – 2 minutes)

Ingredients:

  1. Two Boxes of Miltons’ Gourmet Crackers (any flavor will do)
  2. Your favorite brand of cream cheese (preferably the foil wrapped block kind)
  3. Your favorite brand / type of salsa (buy the spicier kind for more “fire”)

Directions:

  1. Using a shallow plate or dish, take the cream cheese out of the packaging and place it in the middle of the plate;
  2. Pour/ ladle salsa all over the cream cheese until it fully coats the cream cheese and has some salsa pooling around the cream cheese
  3. Serve with Milton’s Crackers.

Milton’s crackers are large enough to “cut through” the cream cheese and salsa with the edge of the cracker. You’ll love the creaminess of the cheese, the spicy tang of the salsa, and the crunch of the crackers.

The evening was a success – and the thanks to the firemen, our baker-host didn’t let his guests go hungry.  Send us your favorite recipe or serving suggestions and we’ll post our favorites on this page.  Happy July 4th everyone!
